The primary, near-term mission of the Center is to bring together researchers from all areas of science and engineering with interest and expertise in the nanotechnology area, to foster new, multidisciplinary collaborative nanotechnology research and educational programs through regular joint seminars, colloquia and workshops, to serve as a credible platform for large-scale multidisciplinary external funding initiatives, to aid in the acquisition and operation of major new nanotechnology infrastructure facilities and instrumentation, and to serve as a conduit for knowledge transfer and interactions with nanotechnology-related businesses and industry.

In the long term, the Center will strive to enhance the UGA nanoscience and engineering effort and its national and international visibility through the establishment of Eminent Scholar positions within the Center and through new construction of significant space resources to house multidisciplinary nanotechnology research groups and infrastructure facilities.
